Read UIIs
This section describes the appropriate reader technology used to read the UII. Each UII affixed to an item in accordance with IUID policy and standards is encoded in a two-dimensional (2D) Data Matrix that can only be read by a 2D scanner. UIIs cannot be read using an ordinary linear barcode laser scanner. The appropriate reader technology is available in the commercial market. DoD does not endorse any specific vendor, but recommends that defense suppliers conduct market research and select from among Automated Identification Technology (AIT) vendors.
